On Thursday, May 20th, 1999, at 1400 hours, the Prime Minister of Greece Prof. Costas Simitis made an official visit to the YLIKON A.E. manufacturing facility at Mandra Attikis.

The purpose of the visit was to stress the Prime Minister's vivid interest in supporting the manufacturing firms using high technology.
YLIKON was chosen as an exemplary manufacturing facility which succeed through heavy investment in high technology to enhance product quality, increase sales and employment, reduce costs and effect exports of marine spare parts and equipment to over 80 countries.

Costas Simitis was accompanied by the Minister for Industry and Development Dr. Evangelos Venizelos, the Under Secretary Ms. Anna Diamantopoulou and Mr. Theodoros Tsoukatos, his Privy Councillor .

Guests of Honour included Mr. Dinos Vrettos, Under Secretary for Agriculture, Mr. Theodoros Pangalos, former Foreign Secretary, Mr. Theofanopoulos, General Secretary of the Ministry for Industrial Development, Mr. Beis, Director General of the same Ministry, the leadership of the National Organisation for the Small or Medium Enterprises (ΕΟΜΜΕΧ), Mr. Mihalis Neonakis, Assistant to the General Secretary of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PA.SO.K.), Ms. Dionysia Stamataki, Director of the Investments Department of the Ministry for Industry and Development, Ms. Eleftheria Galogavrou, Public Relations Officer to the Under Secretary for Industry and Development, a large number of junior government officials, local Mayors and City Councilors of Mandra and nearby communities, Mr. Panayiotis Kalos, independent investment advisor, Mr. Dimitris Damkalidis, Country Manager Alternate of Bank of Cyprus in Greece, Mr. Miltiadis Natsikas, Regional Manager of Eurobank for the Mandra area, many senior civil servants, PA.SO.K. ruling party officials of the region, journalists and media representatives.
The Piraeus shipping community was represented by Mr. Antonis Printezis, President of the Merchant Navy Superintendent Engineers Club and other superintendent engineers from Piraeus based shipping companies such as Ceres, Stelmar, Mare, Larus, Laskaridis, Latsis, Mayflower, etc.

Costas Simitis and his party were given a warm welcome by the local population and the YLIKON staff.






The delegation was received by Mr. Apostolos Spanomanolis, the President of YLIKON.







The delegation was then given a guided tour of the YLIKON premises.







Costas Simitis showed an interest in the manufacturing processes employed and asked to be briefed on various technological aspects.






During the tour, Costas Simitis and his party did not miss the chance to approach the machinists and exchange a few words with them. On most occasions the meeting turned out to be a very cordial one.












At the reception which followed the guided tour, the assembly was addressed by Dr. Costas Spanomanolis, Member of the YLIKON Board of Directors.






Cordial response was made by the Secretary for Industry and Development, Dr. Evangelos Venizelos.



The final address was delivered by the Prime Minister Costas Simitis himself.







At the end of the address, Dr. Spanomanolis formally thanked the Prime Minister for his visit and offered him a brass sextant as a souvenir of his visit.



After the formalities were concluded the delegation met members of the assembly, staff and visitors and talked informally.






Costas Simitis' visit was covered by all Greek TV channels and the national political and financial press.
